The Zombification of American Culture

They're everywhere - you can't turn on the TV or go to the movies or play a video game these days without running headlong into a swarm of the undead. Zombies have conquered American popular culture... How did this happen; why did it happen and why now?

American Horror Story: Coven - Halloween Zombie Attack
These are all tough questions - but we will attempt to answer them for you. Now, Zombies aren't really that new and zombie movies have been around since at least 1932. There may have been some during the silent era as well, but we can't find any evidence of it (unless you count Nosferatu as a zombie which is probably fair). The 1932 flick, White Zombie seemed to have inspired rock musician Rob Zombie (we're guessing that's not his real name) as well. Now, this early Zombie flick is semi-racist because they're going out of their way to highlight that these aren't typical Jamaican rasta Voodoo zombies, but instead white chicks (being controlled using Voodoo magic). So, the genesis of Zombie lore does start down in the Caribbean and is tied to various drugs used to place people in trances and such. That traditional zombie theme was resurrected (excuse the pun) in this Season's American Horror Story - with witches doing battle with a New Orleans Voodoo Queen. But we digress.

Bela Lugosi was the undisputed creepiest guy in Hollywood for 2 decades

Zombies have been around for a long time - why are they so popular now? It seems as though the resurgence really picked up in the late 70's and early 80's. much of that was fueled by the many zombie films produced by George Romero. What was going on in American culture at that time? Well, we had Jimmy Carter and then Voodoo economics with Ronald Reagan. We had more of an awareness that we were just 5 minutes away from self annihilation on the nuclear clock. We had the introduction of the AIDs virus and the cultural drought of 1980's consumerism and yuppie madness and MTV. Yet, do all of these frightening elements really explain the zombie pandemic?

Maybe people just enjoy watching gore? (not Al Gore)

Perhaps there's a deeper root cause to this seeming never-ending flood of zombies? Could it perhaps be a reflection of an increasingly cynical and negative perspective that much of the population has to direction that our society seems to be heading to. Things for whatever reason, seem to be less hopeful, less promising and more menacing than before. Prior generations had looked forward to progress and personal growth for themselves and their children. Since the 1980's, we've had stagnation of personal income and upward mobility, the constant drumbeat of terrorism and budget cuts and things just seem a little depressing. It may in fact be more appealing for many of us to imagine an apocalyptic future where survival is the only job skill necessary and bills, college and Obamacare no longer factor in. In a world where no matter what you do there's no chance of progress, then killing zombies becomes both entertaining and cathartic.
Does Rick enjoy his new life more than his old one - hard to tell...
Or maybe, just maybe it's even deeper than that. What's one thing all zombies seem to have in common? Well, besides cannibalism - yes, that's right - Disease. Zombies become zombies through infection of some sort. Zombies in fact represent a collective fear that's been with humanity for thousands of years - zombies are the human manifestation of plague. In a plague, like the Black Death, the ones who were most frightening were the sick and the unknowing carriers of disease. Someone who had caught the plague was for all intents and purposes "walking dead" long before they actually died. So, maybe our zombie pandemic is an indictment on modern society - calling it plagued so to speak. The survivors of all these scenarios are in fact turning their back on what society was and helping to kill it off one zombie at a time.

Or maybe, people just like to see rotting corpses walking around and pulling out peoples intestines. Either way, perhaps it's time to really run these zombies back into the ground.

Got Brains?

10 Signs the End is Near

There were a lot of people who were fairly disappointed when the planet didn't vaporize on May 21st, 2011, especially those poor bastards who gave away everything they owned in anticipation of the joyous event. Never fear though, because Apocalypse 2.0 is coming to a planet near you this year on December 21st! (the date of the 13th Mayan Bactune). Yes, that's right - we're pretty sure this time that the end is truly near. All of the signs are here - all the planets are lining up and those Mayans are going to get their revenge after all (or so we've been told by some of their descendants who now work in a Corona Cerveza factory). We may even have to come up with a new set of Apocalypse Party Tips as the last one may have already been used in Apocalypse 1.0 parties and probably wouldn't be as fun a second time.

How can we a prediction like this with such certainty? Well - because we researched this through a painstaking processes of Internet browsing that lasted for hours. The Mayans were in contact with the Chariots of the God's Aliens who by the way are a lot nicer and not at all related to the X-Files aliens or the Alien alien or even the Predator alien. Anyway, these nicer ones told the Mayans what was up to give us a chance to build our own escape ships and go somewhere else but maybe they should have told the Spanish because the Spanish or Aztecs or someone wiped out all of the Mayans and thus we're all screwed. Still not convinced? Well, we've also been given many, many signs that the end is near and we've include the top 10 below.

Could people with hats like these be wrong? We seriously doubt it
The Top 10 Apocalyptic Omens:
  1. The Fiscal Cliff will lead to tax increases for millionaires which will of course signify the end of the world.
  2. Tim Tebow can't win any games - so God has forsaken us.
  3. Saturday Night Live isn't funny anymore - wait that's happened like 6 times before - oh it's the 7th time - got it.
  4. George Lucas gave away Star Wars.
  5. Obama won a second term and now all those dozens of books and movies telling us how bad the second term will be have to come true, right?
  6. Windows 8 has been launched and Breaking Dawn part 2 will be the biggest debut in movie history, yuk!
  7. We've run out of ideas for new Zombie movies or TV shows.
  8. Real-life Zombies are eating people's faces - how gross is that? (so maybe there's one more idea left)
  9. The weather is so bad that even Locusts refuse to go outdoors.
  10. Aliens have placed detour signs around Earth which is why we've witnessed a big slowdown in alien abductions and UFO sightings.
It turns out that the Nazca lines in Peru were in fact the Nascar lines - a particularly difficult track for alien pod racers. Another recent theory posits that this is in fact a sign wherein one group of irate aliens were flipping the bird to another. We may never know for sure as we're all going to die on December 21st.

We told you Corona Beer was involved, didn't we, huh, huh...

Should Zombies be Animated?

Perhaps this is a confusing question as we know that all Zombies are by nature already reanimated - what we're referring to in today's question is whether Zombies in film or Television ought to be analog or digital - human (sort of) or CG effect. Why are we asking this question? Well, there's lot's of reasons:

  • We're bored
  • We like Zombies
  • We're concerned about the over-commercialization of Zombies (it's getting almost as bad as Christmas)
  • We saw a trailer for the new Brad Pitt film World War Z. (Z for Zombie, get it).

Here's the preview:

These zombies look like bugs - what's up with that?

They don't provide us a lot of close ups on the Zombies themselves but we can tell from the clip that there's some serious CG going on with all those Zombies piling up more or less like ants. This does not mean we won't go see the movie - there is no doubt that we will. However, we do have concerns. Do any of you recall Will Smith's I am Legend from a few years back? We were pretty excited about that movie until we got in there and started watching the 100% CG Zombie things doing just a lot of ridiculous crap. Those special effects ruined what might have otherwise been a decent movie (not great one, but a least decent one).

There's nothing like the real thang, baby...
Now it just may be that in a couple of years computer animation software may become sophisticated enough to fully mimic the look and feel of real-life human extras made up to be undead Zombies.  The question is - what do we lose when this happens? Can we have truly great Zombie flicks without that personal touch we've all come to know and love? We don't want to sound like Luddites here - but we're not buying it. We'd like to start the keep Zombies human movement and we'll kick off our crusade with our ten reasons why Zombies should not be computer animated.

Please take an animated breath-mint
10 Reasons to keep Zombies Human

  1. Unemployment is bad enough, we don't want to put all of those extras out of work - think of their families and the little Zombies at home!
  2. Zombie makeovers could become a lost art or at least might become prohibitively expensive.
  3. Zombies should not be behaving like werewolves, sparkly vampires or other video-game like creatures that can crawl up walls and do backflips and other such nonsense. These guys are dead - they can't be in better shape after they croak, right?
  4. We need Human Zombies so we can train new generations of haunted house temps.
  5. An animated Zombie will never have the same pathos and motivation as a human zombie - longing for brains and flesh as well as their past lives.
  6. We should always be able to outrun the average Zombie - this is a long-standing rule broken by films like I am Legend and 28 Days Later. Fast Zombies are a bit like Lance Armstrong taking drugs and transfusing blood during a race - no fair - time out!
  7. Zombie extras (and all their friends and family) buy tickets to see themselves in the show (or tune in to TV and boost ratings) - the loss of this Zombie viewership would be devastating to Hollywood.
  8. Playing a Zombie is an inalienable American right - we read that somewhere - perhaps in the West Virginia state constitution. Doesn't matter where we saw it - and we will fight for that right.
  9. Because Zombie acting proves that there's life after death - well, sort of (maybe it's life after your career dies, we're not sure).
  10. And finally because Zombie(ness) is the final stage in human evolution and we shall not be denied (a preview of) our destiny.
We've hoped that we've convinced you of the righteousness of our cause... We are a nation of the Zombies, For the Zombies and By the Zombies - etc. etc.

The Walking Dead - Season 3

Occasionally, on Raving Reviews we actually watch TV shows and movies and that aren't completely idiotic - one of our favorite of these shows is the Walking Dead. Walking Dead Season 3 began last week, just in time for our Halloween Meltdown. Why do we like the Walking Dead? Here's some of our rating criteria:
  1. It's post-apocalyptic.
  2. It happens down South instead of where we're living (makes it seem more realistic).
  3. It has better than average quality Zombies.
  4. It has an excellent cast of characters and even the stereotypical roles are well played by the ensemble cast.
  5. We care about what happens to the characters, in other words it transcends the gratuitous Zombie killing that often is associated with the genre.

Just when you though it was safe to drive through Atlanta...

Now having said some nice things about the show; we do have a few issues with the Walking Dead; these include:
  • Why doesn't AMC allow any other networks to make good television shows?
  • How many times will they let Carl Junior go out and endanger the whole group before they realize he's just not worth it? (and isn't there a Hamburger joint call Carl Jr.?)
  • Why don't the characters ever bathe?
  • Why don't they all own Samurai swords by now?
  • Why don't they find their own island - preferably in the Bahamas?
  • Why do they let Ricks wife drive?
  • Why does Hershel seem to confuse the flu with flesh easting insanity?

 Some criticism is warranted.

And we're not the only ones who have issues with the Walking Dead - it has become a cultural phenomenon and has inspired a number of interesting parodies.

This parody is kind of like Walking Dead meets Deliverance....

In previous posts we've tried to uncover why Zombies are so popular in our culture - what is about cannibal corpses that never gets old (besides the fact that they're dead)? Is it that by shooting zombies we can stare death in the face and keep on living, who knows. What we do know for sure is that Season 3 of the Walking Dead is shaping up to be more action packed than the first two seasons combined with lot's of new locations and characters and an endless supply of - Zombies...

Botox and the Zombie Apocalypse

We at Raving Reviews have uncovered a staggering revelation. We've discovered the source of the coming Zombie Apocalypse - we found it in Hollywood and the source of the undead pandemic can be traced back to patient zero: Joan Rivers.

The Zombie Apocalypse will be the direct result of celebrity Botox abuse. Joan Rivers is patient zero - in fact we have found out that she had already crossed over to the ranks of the undead years ago (we're working with a team of world renowned forensic anthropologists to determine the exact date).

Joan Rivers is Patient / Zombie Zero

How did we make such a staggering discovery? Last year Raving Reviews opened our own research institute to tackle the challenges that traditional science has dared not address. We call this institute, RavingLabs™ .

Behind the scenes at the launch of RavingLabs™

Uncovering the source of the coming Zombie Apocalypse is not our only project currently underway at RavingLabs; we've launched a full slate of earth-shattering initiatives based upon the following rigorously evaluated questions or observations:
  • Dark Matter as a concept is invalid without a better understanding of "the Force."
  • Why isn't the Universe slowing down after getting so old?
  • Multivitamins when combined with fluoride causes Vamparism.
  • Cat food is responsible for the growing feline obesity epidemic.
  • Why is Gravity such a drag?
  • Will mixing seafood and oil spills lead to better barbecues?
  • Is the Fukushima diet the best approach for rapid weight loss?
  • Did Sarah Palin steal Dan Quayle's brain?
  • Will global warming lead to better surfing conditions?
Some of our research is classified however - so we won't talk about it, no matter how much we might want to... Now back to the Zombies & Botox. What is Botox - Botox is the plague - the same plague that almost wiped out humanity many times before. It is bacteria - but it has become self-aware, intelligent and deviant. Botox planned it's invasion...

In this R-rate explanation - we begin to see how Botox has first lured us into its evil trap and then transformed us into - monsters...

So, you might be asking yourselves - what can we expect from the Zombie Apocalypse? Well, it will be somewhat like Joan Rivers; it will be everywhere, it will be painful and horrifying to behold. It is a shame that the rest of the world must pay such a costly sacrifice to the vanities of Hollywood - if only they had been content with plastic surgery...

This is what the Botox Zombie Apocalypse will look like...

Maybe if we could convince Skynet to attack the Zombies...

Zombies are People too...

Not everyone knows they are a Zombie and hey is it really their fault that they go around looking the way they do, behaving the way they do - eating other people and wrecking civilization? What about the Zombie perspective? Well, thankfully there is a movie that tells their side of the story - a movie that finally answers the question - what's it like to be a Zombie. The movie, originally titled "Wasting Away" is now called "Ahh Zombie." We're not sure whether we like either of the titles for this 2007 cult film, but we certainly love the movie.

So, this all begs the question - why are Zombies so freaking popular - why do so many people love watching Zombie movies? Is it our dread fascination with life after death, it is our realization that we all pass through life utterly oblivious and only concerned about satisfying our need to spend money and gain weight? These and many other deep questions are completely ignored in the movie, "ahh Zombie." What we do get treated to is a genre-busting premise that allows us to parody the entire Zombie pop-culture trend while laughing our heads off (not literally of course even though something similar does happen to the lead character in the film).

We suppose that the deeper philosophical question embedded within the plot is fairly profound - we are not always who we think we are and we tend to see ourselves as something we'd like to be but likely never will be. In this sense the Zombies in this story are just like us - coming to grips with reality and making the best of it. In the end, there's no cure but the movie does give us a bizarre vision of Zombie utopia.

We all tend to see ourselves as slightly different than we are...

Ahh Zombie is destined for Cult film immortalization - which seems appropriate given it is a movie about the undead. It proves that just when you think a genre has run out of just about every creative variation possible - a whole new spin can breath new life into it (pun intended).

Zombies are everywhere - Zombies are cool - Zombies invented Facebook

Ahh Zombies is by no means the only innovative Zombie action flick to come out of Hollywood recently. Woody Harrelson and that Facebook kid made a big splash last year with ZombieLand. At the same time the AMC network has launched a clever new show giving us tips on how to survive the coming Zombie Apocalypse. We will be reviewing both of those here on Raving Reviews in the coming weeks.

Well, we couldn't resist including the best song ever written about Zombies - we're pretty sure Zombies wrote, directed and produced this music video too..

To finish up today we will treat you with some of the best Zombie quotes we could find:
  • "Zombies almost had my ass for dinner!" Bangkok Zombie Crisis (2004)
  • "Bill, just because your father tried to eat you, does that mean we all have to be unhappy? Forever?" Fido (2006)
  • "Who died and made you f**king king of the zombies?" Shaun of the Dead (2004)
  • "Zombies don't read. They ain't hooked on phonics. So give it a rest." All Guts, No Glory (2005)
  • "The first rule of Zombieland: Cardio. When the zombie outbreak first hit, the first to go, for obvious reasons... were the fatties." Zombieland (2009)
  • "Against an army of zombies, no armies could stand. Why, even blown half to bits - undaunted by fire and gas - zombies would fight on so long as the brain cells which
receive and execute commands still remain intact." Revenge of the Zombies (1943)
