Dangerous Liaisons - A Raving Playlist

Love is the ultimate double-edged sword - it drives us to creative heights and also drives us crazy. Whether it is a chemical intoxication or an unpredictable psychosis or perhaps a curse from the gods we'll probably never know. Sultry Florida Groove - A Raving Playlist

It was 25 degrees here this morning (in Ohio, USA) and it's getting to be that time of year when we ask ourselves why the hell we don't live in Florida. Sure, Global Warming is making things hotter up here but it's still not the same (and it still gets pretty cold). So we will be thinking about Florida a lot over the next couple of months and we decided to craft a playlist that will help us conjure visions of beaches, palm trees and Sea Gulls - well, scratch the Sea Gulls - Pelicans work better. We actually hate Sea Gulls, but we can't escape them because now they're in Ohio too (what's up with that anyway?). But we digress, we love most things about Florida (not counting the Banana Republic nature of their voting practices) and someday we may live there again (but perhaps vote absentee in Ohio, which is only slightly above Banana Republic level in election management).

As usual this list is on Spotify as well. So sit back and drink a Margarita and try not to ask yourself why you ruined your life by moving North.

Arizona Skies - A Raving Playlist

This playlist was created one exceptionally clear and striking day three years ago in Southeast Arizona. It's difficult to describe Arizona to those who've never been there, especially the parts of Arizona that many have never visited - like the high Sonoran desert. Despite the decade-long drought there, the high desert with its many mountain ranges is more green than many might imagine - with mesquite trees at lower elevations and pine trees that climb up the peaks. Once you drive out of the high desert headed to towards Tuscon you'll begin to see the massive Saguaro cactus that Arizona is famed for. As you turn North from Tuscon headed towards Phoenix you'll see Joshua Trees - countless of them between those desert cities.

The view from the Huachuca mountains in the Sonoran high desert
Arizona impressed U2 as well back during the early 1980's - so much so that they titled one of their Albums "Under the Joshua Tree" and opened that tour in Phoenix (they then filmed Rattle & Hum in Arizona as well). Anyone who has lived in Arizona will instantly be able to visualize Where the Streets have no Name and Red Hill Mining Town from personal experience. So what is Arizona like? Well, imagine a place where you can see 20, 30 or more miles in the distance. Imagine a place where Earth tones paint the landscape in all directions. Imagine being surrounded by mountains on all sides yet not feeling bounded by them. Imagine a place where Roadrunners are real - and a host of other remarkable desert wildlife is just around the corner.

This is a place that inspires, evokes a mood and we choose the following music in an attempt to capture that feeling. As usual this playlist is available on Spotify as well...

Quite possibly, the best album ever recorded...

Retro Attack - A Raving Playlist

Music defines an age and that age defines the people who become adults during that time. It's true that musical tastes expand and change as one grows older but those memories from high school when you began to experience the world through your own eyes for the first time always stays with you. Many of us came of age during the 1980's - we thought we had the best of all worlds, being able to choose from hits across three decades of cool rock tunes. It was also the beginning of Alternative rock and the launch of M-TV. Now those times with the big hair and Members Only jackets seem hopelessly Retro - yet the music still resonates. For those who still appreciate what the real Freaks & Geeks was like or those who'd like to travel back in time and find out why their parents are so weird - we present to you a Retro tribute. Of course back then we didn't have playlists, we used to record songs on cassette tapes and write the names down on the labels.

As usual, this playlist is available on Spotify as well.

Freedom - A Raving Playlist

What is Freedom, what does it really mean? Is it the absence of tyranny? Is Freedom the ability to do what you want, go where you want and be yourself? Or is it perhaps the ability to express your opinions and worship how you want to without being forced to think and behave the way someone else wants you to? These are all deep questions - questions that have relatively little to do with this playlist that we happened to name "Freedom." There is one thing that we're certain of though, you can listen to these tunes while you're pondering those great questions and chances are you will determine what Freedom means to you - and after all - that's the only thing that really matters isn't it?

As usual you can find this list on Spotify - and guess what - that's free too (if you don't mind the ads)!

Life of Illusion - A Raving Playlist

Been feeling like you're having a existential crisis lately? Think you might have one soon? Well, we've got you covered with our Life of Illusion playlist. For those who still remember the 1970's (and early 1980's) you'll note that the list is named after legendary Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh's single from 1981. Sometimes we don't credit rock stars or singers with having much philosophical acumen but every once in a while, they'll create songs that are a lot deeper than they sound - kind of like Dust in the Wind. So, we put together a playlist of profound songs, songs that make us think or otherwise place us in a self-reflective mood as we ponder our place in the universe. As usual, you can find this list on Spotify as well.

Album art - Joe Walsh's "There goes the neighborhood" with single "Life of Illusion"

BTW - here's the lyrics if you're interested... enjoy your existential crisis

"A Life Of Illusion" Lyrics
Sometimes I can't help the feeling that I'm
Living a life of illusion
And oh, why can't we let it be
And see through the hole in this wall of confusion
I just can't help the feeling I'm
Living a life of illusion

Pow! Right between the eyes
Oh, how nature loves her little surprises
Wow! It all seems so logical now
It's just one of her better disguises
And it comes with no warning
Nature loves her little surprises
Continual crisis

Hey, don't you know it's a waste of your day
Caught up in endless solutions
That have no meaning, just another hunch
Based upon jumping conclusions
Caught up in endless solutions
Backed up against a wall of confusion
Living a life of illusion

Artificial Intelligence - A Raving Playlist

Well, after writing our review for 2001, A Space Odyssey we asked ourselves the question, what type of music does HAL listen too. Sure we know he like to sign "Daisy" but that was when he a just a kid in the lab. Then we got to thinking, what about Watson, Skynet, Data, The Matrix Architect and even David from the movie AI - what music would they like? After doing an obsessive amount of research we came to the conclusion that most artificial intelligences would enjoy the songs in the playlist presented below and we have to say that we're quite surprised at what good taste they have in music. Perhaps it won't be as bad when they take over the planet as we thought it might be.

Harmonic Insanity - A Raving Playlist

As you might have noticed, all of our playlists have a little story associated with them. This playlist was inspired by trips to the local Ikea this Summer. The only way to describe our first experience was stunned, disoriented and overwhelmed by meatballs and lingaberries. At one point we feared for our lives, thinking we might be stuck inside forever as there didn't seem to be any exists, only winding paths of consumer decadence at affordable prices. Anyway, after we escaped with some lighting fixtures and Swedish chocolate we found out that Jonathan Coulton had actually written a song that perfectly captured our first impressions of Ikea. We then were inspired to find songs on crazy topics or just crazy songs period. As usual, you can find this playlist on Spotify.

Enter the Scandinavian Dimension...
What constitutes a crazy song? Here are some guidelines; it's crazy if...
  • If William Shatner or Leonard Nimoy are in it (BTW - we heard that Nimoy's Ballad Of Bilbo Baggins is going to be used on the new Hobbit movie soundtrack) .
  • It has any connection to Baywatch
